For many years this verse has come up in my thoughts. It says, “Love the Lord God with all your heart, with all your soul, and all your strength,” Many who grew up in church will say, “Well everyone knows that.” Yes, we know it but do we or can we live it? Several years ago when I felt I closer to the Lord than I had ever been I spoke on this to the women’s ministry I was leading at my very small multi racial non-denominational church. I asked them if they ever thought about why the Word didn’t just say, “Love the Lord.” What came to me was because we are complex imperfect humans we truly can’t love Him and obey Him unless we are doing it with all three of these things at once. We may love Him in our heart but maybe at that time we aren’t loving him with our mind, or maybe we’re loving him with our mind but our strength is weak. Does this make sense? Maybe it keeps coming back to me because He is trying to show me where I need work or where I’m lacking. I just believe that a big key to our spiritual walk is contained in this verse. Romans 12:2 says we are to be “transformed by the renewing of our mind”–maybe so we can love Him with our mind? Just some things that are stirring within me today.
“Lord show us how to love you the way you intended for us to.” Amen
